Die Post und Swisscom spannen ein gemeinsames Netz für das Internet der Dinge

Medienmitteilung Swisscom AG, Bern, 22. März 2017. Die Schweizerische Post und Swisscom arbeiten für das Internet der Dinge ab sofort zusammen. Swisscom betreibt das sogenannte Low Power Network für beide und kann nun dank der zusätzlichen Standorte der Post das Netz rasch verdichten. Die Vernetzung von Dingen bekommt mit der Partnerschaft eine weitere Dynamik – davon profitieren Unternehmen und Private in der ganzen Schweiz.

Mit einem Tastendruck wird eine Sendung zur Abholung angemeldet, sensible Pakete schlagen bei einer Temperaturüberschreitung Alarm oder es wird nachvollziehbar, wo eine Sendung unerlaubterweise geöffnet wurde. Solche Informationen in Echtzeit helfen der Schweizerischen Post ihre Dienstleistungen laufend zu verbessern, zu beschleunigen und abzusichern. Mit dem Low Power Network (LPN) sind die entsprechenden Informationen bereits heute stromnetzunabhängig und kostengünstig übertragbar. Swisscom hat ein solches Netz schweizweit aufgebaut. Die Post bringt zusätzliche Standorte für Empfangsstationen und ihre Erfahrung aus der Nutzung ihres eigenen Pilotnetzes mit in die neue Partnerschaft ein. Beide Firmen stärken durch die Zusammenarbeit ihre Position beim Aufbau und der Realisierung des Internets der Dinge.

Ein Knopfdruck mit grosser Wirkung

Die digitale Vernetzung von Dingen bietet unzählige Möglichkeiten. Die Post hat einen drahtlosen Smart Button entwickelt und getestet, um in einem Spital per Knopfdruck Produkte nachzubestellen, die im Medizinalschrank zur Neige gehen. Weiter hat die Post an ihrem Hauptsitz in Bern im Gebäude für das Facility Management Smart Buttons platziert. Mit einem Knopfdruck benachrichtigen Mitarbeitende das Facility Management, wenn etwas gereinigt werden muss oder beispielsweise eine Kaffeemaschine defekt ist. Claudia Pletscher, Leiterin Entwicklung und Innovation bei der Post, betont denn auch: "Dank der Partnerschaft können wir uns auf die Entwicklung von konkreten Anwendungsfällen konzentrieren und flexiblere und intelligentere Dienstleistungen ausbauen, die auf der Vernetzung von Dingen basieren. Dafür sind eine gute Abdeckung und Netzqualität zentral."

Ein Netz für alle

Die beiden Partner setzen auf ein gemeinsames Netz, auf welchem sie gemeinsam Anwendungen entwickeln wollen und das auch Dritten offensteht. Christian Petit, Leiter Swisscom Enterprise Customers, verspricht sich von der Partnerschaft noch mehr Dynamik in der Digitalisierung: "Wir freuen uns auf die Zusammenarbeit mit der Post. Von der Partnerschaft profitiert auch die Schweizer Wirtschaft – und sie kann bereits heute das Netz für neue Anwendungen nutzen. Erste kommerzielle Anwendungen wie Parkplätze, Zustands-, Kundenfeedbackmessungen und Umweltdatenerfassungen sind inzwischen in Betrieb." Swisscom hat als eine der ersten Anbieterinnen weltweit einen nationalen Ausbau realisiert: Das schweizweite Low Power Network ist seit Herbst 2016 in Betrieb. Die Partnerschaft mit der Post beschleunigt den weiteren Netzausbau. Ende 2017 werden 90 Prozent der Bevölkerung in der Schweiz mit LPN versorgt sein. Swisscom ist offen für weitere Partnerschaften.

Das Low Power Network

Das Low Power Network ist ein ergänzendes Netz, das für das Internet der Dinge genutzt wird. Es bietet eine schmale Bandbreite mit hoher Reichweite und übermittelt Daten sehr energiesparend. Damit senkt es die Vernetzungskosten. Je nach Anwendung können die batteriebetrieben Sender jahrelang unabhängig vom Stromnetz Informationen übermitteln. LPN basiert auf dem offenen LoRaWAN-Industriestandard. Swisscom gehört seit Januar 2015 der LoRa Alliance an, die Post seit Juni 2016 (www.lora-alliance.org). Die Allianz umfasst weltweit über 400 Mitglieder. Swisscom hat als eine der ersten Anbieterinnen einen nationalen Ausbau angekündigt und realisiert. Die Post testet seit März 2016 ein eigenes Netz auf der Achse Bern-Biel und hat erfolgreich mehrere Use Cases realisiert.

Swiss Post and Swisscom team up with a joint network for the Internet of things

Press Release Swisscom AG, Berne, 22 March 2017. Swiss Post and Swisscom start work together with immediate effect on the Internet of things. Swisscom operates the so-called Low Power Network for both companies, and thanks to the additional Swiss Post locations, will now be able to develop the network quickly. The partnership brings a new dynamic to the networking of things – with benefits for companies and private customers throughout Switzerland.

A consignment is registered for collection at the touch of a button, sensitive parcels raise an alert when a temperature is exceeded, or you can find out where a consignment was opened without permission. Information like this in real time helps Swiss Post to continuously improve, speed up and secure its services. With the Low Power Network (LPN), transmitting such information battery powered and cost-effective, Swisscom has established just such a network throughout Switzerland. Swiss Post’s contribution to the new network will include additional locations for base stations and its experience from the use of its own pilot network. The collaboration allows both companies to strengthen their position in the development and realization of the Internet of things.

A touch of a button with a big impact

The digital networking of things offers countless possibilities. Swiss Post has developed and tested a wireless smart button used for reordering products that are running low in a hospital’s medicinal cabinet at the touch of the button. Swiss Post has also placed smart buttons around its headquarters in Berne in the building for Facility Management. At the touch of a button, employees can inform Facility Management if something needs to be cleaned or, for example, if a coffee machine is not working. Claudia Pletscher, Head of Development & Innovation at Swiss Post, also emphasizes: “Thanks to this partnership, we can focus on the development of specific applications and build more flexible and intelligent services based on the networking of things. Good coverage and network quality are key to this.”

A network for all

The two partners are focusing on a common network on which they plan to develop applications jointly and which is also open to third parties. Christian Petit, Head of Swisscom Enterprise Customers, expects the partnership to bring an even greater dynamic to the process of digitization: “We are looking forward to working with Swiss Post. The partnership also has benefits for the Swiss economy – which can already use the network for new applications. The first commercial applications, such as parking spaces, status, customer feedback measurements and environmental data collection are now in operation.” Swisscom was one of the first providers in the world to implement a network on a national scale: the nationwide Low Power Network is live since in autumn 2016. The partnership with Swiss Post will speed up further expansion of the network. 90% of the population in Switzerland will be covered by LPN by the end of 2017. Swisscom is open to further partnerships.

The Low Power Network

The Low Power Network is a complementary network used for the Internet of things. It offers a narrow bandwidth with a high range and is very energy-efficient. This reduces connectivity costs. Depending on the application, the battery-operated transmitters can transmit information independently of the electricity grid for years. LPN is based on the open LoRaWAN industry standard. Swisscom has been part of the LoRa Alliance since January 2015, and Swiss Post since June 2016 (www.lora-alliance.org). The alliance has over 400 members worldwide. Swisscom was one of the first providers in the world to announce and implement a network on a national scale. Since March 2016, Swiss Post has been testing its own network between Berne and Bienne and has successfully implemented several use cases.
